Strong winds

Post by llholmes1948 »

I understand that yesterday's Eastbound Empire Builder was delayed for a couple of hours near the park yesterday because of predicted wind gusts of 85-90 mph. Would have been quite a day at Dawson Pass or Siyeh Pass.

Was that a vortex, too? (No TV weather-news, so pardon my total ignorance.)

There's a big west coast storm bringing strong winds from the west. They're called Chinook Winds when the come over the divide. The air is forced over the divide and is compressed at it descends to lower elevations. So the air is naturally warmed by that compression. 50 degrees on the Front Yesterday and very high winds. Most is forecast for Monday.

my neighbor says it blew 115 in babb and 119 at logan pass. i'll need to get someone to ck my cabin. several years a go a big wind sucked the metal roof off a leeward portion of my roof. guess the wind created a vacuum in that spot.

Winds to and above 80-100 mph were reported all along the Rocky Mountain Front yesterday. Power lines were down and other damage was reported. If your cabin is susceptible to wind damage I would definitely have someone check it for you.

the insignificant roof damage is the only problem we've had over the years amazingly. cabin is on a hill facing swest and completely boarded up. one of the window boards blew off once. found remnants of it about 400 yards away. and folks ask why we don't use it in the winter.

This would explain the scene on the St. Mary webcam on Sunday...

Yep, it's all in North Dakota!

More winds today (Wednesday). My weather station is reminding me to hold onto my hat.

In 1991 I think it was, during Thanksgiving we drove over to Two Medicine Lake from Cut Bank. The wind was blowing 80 MPH they said but my dad, a native Montanan paid it no mind as the wind moved the trunk area of the Lincoln Continental with 4 passengers up and down where we had stopped. I think I have pics from that day; I'll never forget it.
Another time I was driving back from college and as you hit that turn out of E Glacier at the top of the hill, my little Pinto got pulled into the snow ruts that I was trying to stay above... needless to say I couldn't go any further and when I went to get out of the car, the wind loosened my car door almost off its hinge. SHEESH the wind is brutal when it comes over those mountains.

These winds the last couple days sound so powerful; especially when they consistently blow rather than just gust. Hard to imagine really!
