We finally have snow! :D :)

I did a little training race on Wed, and we actually did half the race on natural snow. Really...Felt strange. We got 6" or snow today. Commute seemed fine, but I'm driving side roads.

I thought maybe I could get out later today.
Looking at the latest "discussion" from the NWS, I'm not so sure now 8)
Maybe after lunch I can get out if the wind dies down.
It's pretty cold here at my place and a light wind is still blowing.

Barometer is falling too. Dropped .21 inches in the last 12 hours
29.98 to 29.77 now at 6 AM

National Weather Service Missoula MT
409 AM MST Sun Feb 10 2019

...PROLONGED WIDESPREAD LIGHT SNOW ACROSS THE NORTHERN ROCKIES
THROUGHOUT THE NEXT WEEK...

.DISCUSSION...

Very cold wind chill will continue to be present this morning
across northwest Montana and near the Continental Divide. Wind
chill as cold as 40 below zero is possible across the Glacier
Park region this morning. Conditions will improve by midday today
as east winds dissipate.
Meanwhile, a weak surge of moisture
moving from the southwest over the very cold air already in-place
across the Northern Rockies will create widespread light snow
today. This relatively warm, moist air moving over a very cold
airmass is something we refer to as overrunning (and we are
expecting a lot of this type of snowfall today and through the
coming week). Anticipate 3 to 6 inches of snowfall mainly across
north central Idaho and over the Bitterroot Valley in Montana
through this evening. The snowfall will create hazardous winter
driving conditions. The cold temperatures will be slowly moderated
by the snowfall.

Tonight, moisture will spread northward over all of western
Montana, however north central Idaho will continue to receive
accumulating snowfall as well. Another round of snowfall ranging
from a trace to 6 inches will occur, creating and furthering
hazardous winter driving conditions. There does not appear to be
much of a break for north central Idaho snow accumulations all the
way through Monday afternoon. Snow will be a bit lighter and more
episodic over western Montana on Monday. Clouds and snowfall will
further modify the cold air.

A period of prolonged moderate to heavy snowfall is still on
track for the Monday night into Wednesday time frame. Current
forecast model solutions bring the most significant snow amounts
through the Idaho panhandle and into northwest Montana. Widespread
travel impacts are anticipated during this period.

A brief break in precipitation is expected on Thursday as a
shortwave ridge of high pressure builds over the region. The next
weather system will arrive Friday, ushering in a more active
pattern going in to the weekend.

It has been real cold for a few days now, has started warming today, up to about 15 right now, but snow expected the next few days, for as light as things were in Nov, Dec and Jan, it is making up for it now!

It was 2F yesterday when I went to the golf course to ski. As soon as I got there snow started coming down pretty hard....more than an inch in the hour or so I was there.
Today was nice. A balmy 17F at 1:30PM. 8)
Now 18F at 4:30PM.
And as Dave said, more snow is apparently on the way.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Missoula MT
256 PM MST Thu Feb 28 2019

...The Strongest Arctic Blast of the Winter Starts Friday
Morning...

.DISCUSSION...Forecast models have continued to trend stronger
with an already extremely impressive arctic air mass forecast to
impact the Northern Rockies starting Friday morning. For example,
the latest NAM model projects a surface high pressure of 1054mb
along the Continental Divide which drives temperatures down to
near -30F at 850mb (about 5000 feet) across much of Western
Montana by Sunday morning. Meteorologically speaking, these
numbers are impressive for any part of the winter. But they are
undoubtedly outside recent memory of any forecaster in this office
for the first week of March! Thus...we are forecasting
significant public impacts due to wind, wind chill and drifting
snow which could be far more dramatic than any of the preceding
"Arctic Blasts" this month. While this arctic system will bring
some additional snowfall (generally 1 to 4 inches), the impacts
associated with widespread gusty winds (40 to 50 mph) could be
truly crippling, especially in those places which have recently
received impressive amounts of fresh snow. As such we have issued
Winter Storm Watches for those areas we feel will be most
susceptible to challenging, if not downright hazardous travel
conditions starting Friday.

Right now we anticipate the arctic boundary will cross the
Continental Divide and cruise through Glacier National Park by 8am
Friday. It should be well into the Kalispell by lunch time and
continue to fill in the Flathead and Mission Valley with cold air
and gusty winds throughout the afternoon. Meanwhile the arctic air
will quickly move over Rogers and MacDonald Passes early in the
afternoon making a beeline for Clearwater Jct. and ultimately into
the Missoula Valley around 6 PM Friday evening. The air will work
its way up the Bitterroot Valley Friday night while also filling
into the Butte/Georgetown area overnight as well. It`s important
to note that conditions won`t necessarily be at their
worst immediately as the arctic moves into an area, but instead
will quickly get much worse within an hour or so of its arrival.

It actually appears as though a secondary push of even colder
arctic air will easily cross the Rocky Mountain front Saturday
night. This will produce another period of stronger wind gusts,
albeit likely not as strong as Friday. But the colder air will
create a very dangerous wind chill situation for most of Western
Montana. High temperatures on Sunday will be a truly astounding
30 to nearly 40 degrees below normal in some places. The air mass
is forecast to be at its coldest Monday morning with most
everywhere seeing below zero low temperatures that in some places
will likely challenge record values for early March. The cold will
continue well into Tuesday as well, though some moderation is
likely.

In the short term...a weak frontal system will produce showers
into this evening, but mainly over southwest Montana and the
Flathead eastward through Glacier National Park.

Partial clearing and quite cold temperatures are expected over
north central Idaho, west central and southwest Montana and Lemhi
County tonight.

&&

.AVIATION...A weak frontal system will move across western Montana
into late this afternoon and evening. The most note worthy issue
will be scattered snow showers and the resultant obscurations,
especially southwest Montana, Lemhi County, and KGPI east across
Glacier Park into this evening. Partial clearing over north
central Idaho and southwest Montana tonight should eventually
allow patchy valley fog to develop by Friday morning.

Been very close to the record for the coldest February on the east side. I think we did set a record for the longest interval without a chinook. All the winds we had were Arctic types from the north. -30 something in Choteau last weekend. Oh, and when the Arctic wind blows the snow into tight drifts its a real bear to shovel. I usually have to take a spade and cut the snow into blocks before I can move it with my Yooper Scooper. Nice this morning, brilliant sunshine, no wind and -10 F.

Hey Ralph!
-12F this morning at daylight when I fed the birds.
I went skiing at the golf course about 1:30 and it was 17F and gorgeous. I know s**t all about snow, but so far I like temps between 15-20F for skiing.
Snow was freshly groomed and fast, and hardly any people.

I know what you mean about wind packed snow. My work mate and I had to clean the snow off the roof of one of the joints not long ago.
The roof is about 35x60 and the snow was 12-18 inches deep across the entire roof...and "packed". Took 3 hours with him on his lil electric blower and me shoveling.

Here's looking out my den window just now. Looks due north. Big Mountain and the ski hill is 6miles behind those aspens center frame in the pano view below.

My neighbor had to dig that trench to get to his truck parked there :)
Image

My sunflower seed feeder and suet feeders have been very popular the last couple weeks since most "natural" food sources are buried in snow.
Even had a pair of mallard ducks eating sunflower seeds on the ground a couple days!
The undisturbed snow under and to the right of the feeder is a settled 28inches. Barely enough to cover the grass around Christmas.

For me any temp between around +5F and 30 is great for skiing with a hard wax for grip. Once the snow turns to corn temps above freezing are really fun. The sun can cause problems at the warmer range though. Now that we are into March the sun is having a greater impact on the snow. Even with temperatures near or below zero there are drips from my roof.
