Backpacking trip outside of glacier

Even though Glacier is the focal point, the Flathead and the surrounding area presents boundless activities, talk about it here.

Backpacking trip outside of glacier

Post by Kris91 »

We haven't gotten a permit yet and I'm worried we won't get anything for glacier this year. I know we could try for a walk-in permit, but would like other options. I'm just wondering about other places in montana. We're looking for a 4-6 day trip, maybe 8-12 miles/day. I had acl and meniscus surgery last summer. I've been really working hard and want to take my knee on a good trip this summer!

Thanks!

Just south of Glacier are the Great Bear and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas. They are an area larger than Glacier. There are many possible trips of any length. The area is National Forest. You can go pretty much anywhere you want at any time. No permits are required for backpacking.

Another favorite of mine is the Mission Mtn Wilderness from the Seely Swan side. Lots of nice lakes to visit.

It's good to know about Mission Mt. I've thought about the Bob quite a bit, but it seems I have a lack of backpacking friends, so I'd be solo. I kind of like the social interaction of defined campsites (in Glacier).
