New Recreation Activity in Whitefish

Even though Glacier is the focal point, the Flathead and the surrounding area presents boundless activities, talk about it here.

Yah, we had a couple of these kind of places open up here. It's a little difficult until you get the hang of throwing. (I never really did :oops:Lots of clangers ) My kids did pretty good after a couple of games.
You have to sign a waiver, but it seemed to be a place where an accident could easily happen. We were shown how to throw then basically left unsupervised. I came out of it with all my fingers, so it was a win for me, I guess.

Heck, when I was 10-12 years old we threw ordinary hatchets and knives at pine trees.
We also played "Split", a game where you threw your knife at the other guys feet trying to get close without hitting his foot 8)
The idea was to get your opponents feet spread as wide as possible before he fell over.
And yes, occasionally somebody's foot got hit, but nobody was ever seriously injured. The leather shoes of the old days helped--"Keds" not so much 8)

BB gun wars were popular too. You had to wear swimming goggles to play.
Of course our parents didn't approve of any of this stuff, but some of us didn't care.
Life was different and a LOT more fun back in the good old days!!!

We made an ax/knife throwing target at an archery club I belonged to back east.
It was made of a bunch of 6inch 2x4 pine blocs stacked so the end grain faced the thrower.
There was a 2x6 on the top and bottom with long lengths of rod stock on either end.
The rods had nuts and big washers so we could crank the 2'6s down TIGHT thus holding the blocks in place.
It worked very well and nobody was ever hurt--including kids of the families.

I'll go look at the place in Whitefish when I get a chance.

Given that "stuff happens", it's hard for me to see how one can get hurt IF people follow sensible rules.
Personally, I don't approve of alcohol being served at a venue like ax throwing. I think that's asking for trouble.
It'll all depend on how well the owners monitor the activity and enforce their rules.

My daughter tells me that there is now a hatchet throwing place around Portland, Maine so when I visit her she can take me there and I can get some practice instead of showing up as a total greenhorn in Whitefish.

I stopped by today to check the place out. Got there at about 12:10 and it was dark and closed :(
There was one of those lil clock faces by the locked door saying "Be back at 12:00"
I beat on the window glass by the door and some old guy(with an ear ring) UGG :( showed up and indicated they were closed by mouthing words and sign language--waving his arms.
DUHHHHHH!
I couldn't hear what he was saying. He just waved me off and went back to the back of the place.

The hours in the newspaper article said they opened at 12 noon.
Their "Fakebook" page says 2:00PM opening.

They need to get their S**t together.
I'll try again another day.

We have one of these near us...near a brewery, so you can get a lit up and then go throw some axes. My guess is it’s a place where a group (work or otherwise) will go once to say they’ve done it. The price (when I looked quite a while ago locally) was expensive, so not something I’d do.

Their "Fakebook" page says:

OUR RATES

*Prices are per person

Public Lane 1 Hour
$15*
1 Hour throwing reservations are recommended for groups of 2-4 people and is plenty of time to get in enough throws. Perfect for a unique date night or a great way to kick off a night on the town. An Axe Coach will be present to give you guidance on how to throw.
Private$2 Bay
$20*
This price will get you a private Bay for one hour. A bay is two targets. Bay A can comfortably fit 10 people and Bay B can fit 8. We recommend 2 hours for 6 or more throwers so everyone gets a chance to play. This is a cheaper way to give axe throwing a try with friends. This allows more axe time, and elbow space. Choose Private Bay A or B with online reservations.
Full facility Rental
$600

2 Hours of axe throwing with all of your friends, family or colleagues. You’ll have the whole place to yourselves and our friendly staff will make sure your event goes off without a hitch. We have 12 targets that can hold up to 70 throwers. Don’t forget that groups of this size can book their event any day of the week and outside of normal business hours.

We suggest a 15-20% gratuity if you are happy with their service.

Tipping for axe throwing? Really? For what service?
Like Jayw, I'll pass on this place. I can throw my axe at a tree for nothin' 8)
And not have to tip anyone.

pete

PS
The location of Hank's Hatchets is not easy to spot while driving.
And this time of year, you need a 4W drive, or a good front wheel drive to get up the short but steep driveway on the packed snow.
And that driveway would be insane going down that hill if it got icy.

I tried to look up the local pricing. One person can't rent a lane. I found a Groupon of 4 people for 2 hrs for $112, 6 people $164. For 4 people, let's see, that's $28 a person or $14/hr. But, you have to share the place with your friends.

We had an indoor axe throwing place opened up here in Billings in July.

They're open from 4 pm to 9 pm Tuesday through Thursday, 4 pm to 10 pm on Friday, and 1pm to 10 pm on Saturday (closed Sunday and Monday). The rate is $15 hour for adults and $12 a hour for Youth 17 and under. You have to contact them for group rates. The parking lot has been full every time I've driven past it during the hours they're open.

They even have axe throwing leagues. I suppose you could say it's like dart throwing on steroids. LOL

Ax throwing might work in this area. There's still a lot of logging around here.
I think "Pioneer Days" had events like ax throwing.
The yuppy types coming to ski in the winter or hike in the summer might go for it when the weather is bad. 8)
If it's promoted right and the price point is reasonable they might get some leagues started.
I think it's a long shot, but who knows?

Here is their website:

http://hankshatchets.com/

And more news from the Flathead Beacon:

https://flatheadbeacon.com/2020/01/24/s ... whitefish/

Maybe the trails in Glacier will be less crowded this summer because of so many people going to Whitefish to throw hatchets.
