Camp chairs

Post by Jay w »

Has anyone found a chair they love. Here's what I'm looking for:

-Comfortable
-Small (but not backpacking small)
-Light

We've used the $10 chairs forever, but they force your back into a round position. They're also fairly large for packing into the car (I'll pack two). I have one of these:

http://www.rei.com/search.html?ir=q%3Af ... lite+chair

It's small and light, but the top of the back pokes into my shoulders. A nice chair (I got it for Christmas) so I haven't used it yet. It might be comfortable enough, but Julie doesn't like it for those extended sitting sessions. We also found a larger chair that has some poles on the sides of the seat section that makes it more comfortable, but it's significantly larger.

Thanks,

Jay

I know just what you mean. Sitting in most cheap fold up camp chairs is like sitting in a hole. For car camping my wife and high purchased two of these chairs. Everyone who sits in them likes how comfortable they are. Unfortunately they do not fold down very small and they are not light. But they are comfortable.

That looks like a good design. I'll have to weigh our current (POS) chair and check the weight. I didn't see a bag. Does the chair come with a carry bag so you want haul it?

The ad doesn't say about a bag on Amazon. One of the reviews said they do not come with a bag.
Many good reviews. Certainly strong enough since some 400lb+ guy liked it. Tall back.

Damn, I lost my long post.

Ok, the current chair is 6.3 lbs, 34" long by 6 inches (or less) in diameter. I consider that the upper end in size and wt of what we're looking for. We found this chair:

http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/mac-spo ... 0000224580#

While comfortable, it's 9 lbs, 46" long, and it will handle a really, really fat ass, so it makes me thing there is something that could easily be designed that's better.

Ralph's chair looks really comfortable, but it would need to be packed under everything. Also, the second use we have for chairs is for fireworks or a fire where we have to walk a while to get to the event. Don't say, "Get a bag" because we went through that with our current tent (that came without a bag... and we use an old camp chair bag). I know I won't get around to making a carrying case for a chair.

We also had some beach chairs like this:

While comfortable, they had to be packed at the bottom of everything, were eaten by squirrels, and you sat a few inches off the ground. (Hard to get in and out.)

Yup, everything has some disadvantage, but I'm wondering if I'm missing anything. I'd think a smart, well made version of the current "crappy chair" would fit the bill. Something with side supports (to make the thing comfortable) and aluminum tubing (to make it light).

Ok Jay, post before it's gone...

No bag. The chair fold flat but not into a tube like shape that most cheap chairs fold into. This chair is not for everyone and I wouldn't recommend it to those looking for a chair that must be carried some distance. But we keep it in the vehicle and pull it out at campsites and picnics and it is very comfortable.

for car camping we use the heavier sam's club type bag o' chair. for paddling we use the small rei fold flat chairs but I usually have to go to a knee to get up. I've started carrying a simple rei three legged stool for backpacking. not high tech or super light but pretty rugged.

I'm not sure if you're serious about the bag o'chair, so I looked it up at Sams, Walmart, and google. Nothing, but maybe bean bag chairs. I did find a Sam's chair with what looks like poles in the side of the seat section.

This should be more comfortable than the traditional chair (to which I refer). Scott, is this what you're talking about?

How about these? You would have to keep them a decent distance from the camp fire, and I'm pretty sure they don't come with a carrying bag.

Wouldn't that be great!? :D

Seriously, I feel your pain. I'm interested to see what you end up with, and if they pass the sitting test.

the car camping chairs I am referring to is a metal and fabric chair that collapses into a long tube shape and fits into a bag. heavy but upright, sturdy and comfortable.

I am going to post something that you probably didn't think of, but it's VERY comfortable and easy to transport - an Inflatable cushion seat:

We prefer the good old fashioned aluminum folding chairs with webbing. They are lightweight with good back support, but hard to find these days. They can be ordered from Lawn Chair USA or found on EBAY. We pair them with cheapo plastic "ottomans" which also double as side tables and stack for travel. Both can be left out at camp, we cover them with trash bags to keep them dry. For backpacking, crazy creek.
