Gunsight Pass Trail Camping

Post by ThomasMore »

Is there anyone out there who knows whether there are bear boxes or hanging poles at the 3 sites along the Gunsight Pass Trail?
Thank you!
Jen

There are poles at both GUN and ELL. I'm not sure which they have at SPE.

There is either a hanging pole or bear box at every backcountry campground in the park. The only time you have to carry a bear proof container is if you will be camping at a site before the hanging pole is installed (early in the season).

You will want to make sure you have a rope to hang your food as most of the BC camps have either poles or bars strung between two trees. I use a little heavier rope than most as I find it easier to throw over the bar. I think they recommend 25 feet of rope or paracord but check the backcountry video to confirm.

Honestly, I've always made sure to bring at least 35ft of rope. While some of the food hanging poles are only 10-12ft in the air, there are a couple of campsites in the park in which they are probably 16+ft. I like to be able to throw my rope over the pole, then hook up my food and from there just leave my rope slung over and hook/unhook as needed. If I came across an 16ft tall pole with only 25ft of rope you're only choice is to tie your food up before hand, and throw your entire food bag over the pole. Not a huge deal, but seems like a PIA. So I just bring extra length in my paracord. Probably adds 4oz to my pack and saves me some headaches.

This 1 minute video clip is for people new to hanging food in GNP.
I'm not shaming anyone ok? So you "snowflakes" out there can rest easy. 8)
Most campsites have gone to poles like this or wires stretched between poles.
This was at Bowman Lake in May 2015.

I use 50ft of that green 1/4 flat braided dacron from Army-Navy surplus.
It's"soft"(easy on my candy-ass hands) limp, doesn't stretch, doesn't twist or tangle, and is very strong.
So I can use it for emergencies as well.

Yeah yeah, it's a little heavier than Para cord or Spectra.
So if your the type that cuts off tooth brush handles to save weight... 8)
50 ft. of 1/4" flat braided poly dacron probably isn't gonna work for you--never mind the purple cotton Crown Royal bag.

EDIT ADD:
This is the line described above. It is not double braid with an inner core.
Looking on the net, I couldn't find what I thought was the same line I have.
It might be 5/16" and not 1/4". Doesn't matter to me. I weighed the piece you see and it weighed 1.2oz for that 10ft piece.
So my 50ft food hanging rope weighs about 6oz. Heavy, but I don't care because i like it. 8)

Looking the the "5 day look ahead" campground status/schedule at GNP, what does the '!' mean 'Special camping conditions exist here, inquire at the backcountry office' what are the special conditions????
