Inside North Fork Road - 2023

Transportation can be a challenge in Glacier. If you have ideas, offer ride shares, or used a commercial service that you were happy with, let everyone know. Also, ask questions about road information, or share road information you may have.

Inside North Fork Road - 2023

Post by llholmes1948 »

I am afraid that I have not paid much attention to this the past few years but is the Inside North Fork Road now open in the summer all the way between Fish Creek and Polebridge or is there still a portion of the road between these points where it is impassable and closed?

If it will be open this summer I assume that between Apgar and Polebridge, it is still much faster to take the Camas Road and the Outside North Fork Road than the Inside North Fork Road.

Thanks,
Lyman

The inside North Fork road has been closed between Fish Creek and the Logging Ranger Station for quite a few years. AFAIK it will remain closed this summer.

Summer 2025 I would like to cycle the Inside North Fork Road from Apgar to Polebridge. By the way, my understanding was that the road is closed to vehicular traffic but passing by bicycle is possible. Would cycling be possible next year?

Thank you, Bill

It might be possible to cycle it but I'm sure I would recommend doing that since you'd be traveling pretty swiftly through the forest and possibly startle a bear which would not be a good thing.

A Glacier Mountaineering Society member has coordinated bike rides between Apgar and Polebridge numerous times mostly on the Fourth of July. The rides were timed to reach Polebridge in time for the parade. On some of those trips members had to walk a short section around Anaconda Creek. I don't recall anyone having any bear problems but it is possible. Carrying bear spray and having it readily available for use is a good idea.

I hiked to Dutch Creek from Logging RS once years ago. That hike was highlighted by watching and listening to a group of wolves that included several pups. Very enjoyable.

Thanks for the responses. I am preparing well because I will be cycling through the Wigwam (BC) and Flathead (BC) valleys afterwards (via Roosville). What I understand is that the Inside North Fork Road has been washed out between Anaconda Creek and Logging Creek making it kind of a single track. I was wondering if passing with a bicyle is still possible. The image below shows the situation in august 2017.

It is still possible to bike the Inside North Fork Road so long as you are prepared for the rough conditions. The road is gravel but there are some erosion areas and sections might be pretty rough. You will also have to wade Anaconda Creek where the road has been washed out.
