Cracker Carcass Closure

Post by JWB475 »

While I am sure this isn't the first time, I have never seen this listed as the reason for a trail closure:

"Craker Lake Trail from Craker Flats Horse Juction to Lake - Carcass"

Yeaah, they close trails in situations where a carcass is close to a trail.
Good idea too since bears will often "defend", sometimes vigorously, a carcass they have claimed.

If it's a big animal carcass, they sometimes "dynamite" the carcass to spread it out so it will be consumed faster.
More small predators and scavengers will be able to get to it.

Not sure, but I believe "stumbling across a bear on a carcass" is a major reason for attacks on people.
I still worry about that during hunting season when there are deer gut piles and sometimes carcasses all over the place.

Occasionally you see a carcass as the reason for a trail closure. It probably hasn't happened much this year. I recall that the Autumn Creek trail was closed a few years back due to an elk carcass and the trail from the foot of Avalanche Lake to the head of Avalanche Lake was closed due to a carcass when we were there a few years ago.

As soon as you mentioned dynamite to disperse the carcass, it immediately reminded me of this story....

Needless to say, it did not work very well on the whale...

That is a great video and thanks for posting the link.

Sort of reminds me of a friend who had a skunk in his basement. He decided to get rid of it by shooting it with a .44 magnum pistol. That didn't work out so well either.
