Going-To-The-Snow Road

Post by Pizza Bob »

A bike ride to Logan Pass today (5/14/16). Started at Avalanche with 58 degree weather. The pass
was 40 degrees, but the ride was sunny the whole way. Very pleasant.

It starts with being greeted by the stunning view of McDonald Creek and clouds encroaching the Garden Wall

About halfway between the Loop and Logan Pass, you can view that there is still a lot of snow around the road.

Image

Approaching Logan Pass you enter the "corridor of snow", about 4~5 feet high.

Image

Ample free bicycle parking, with not a soul in sight. From the various belongings around
the bikes, I assume their riders are on the slopes skiing or snowboarding.

Still a lot of snow to clear from the parking lot.

Panorama of the pass.

Obligatory flask pose.

I love each shot. It's good to see the bikes up there. Wish mine was one and I could share a flask.

I can tell you that I will not be able to sit on a bicycle seat again for a few days :D

I'm a runner, not a biker. In fact, I had not been on a bike since last Labor Day when my wife and
I biked from Big Bend to Logan Pass -- you may recall the road was closed then due to snow! I was
with another couple, and openly admit quite a bit of taking the bike for a walk up the hill. Roundtrip
from Avalanche was 6 hours 15 minutes, and of that time the downhill back to the car was probably
no more than 40 minutes.

There was a sign at Logan Pass that said on weekends the full road is open to bikers and hikers, and
on weekdays after plowing it is open on the west side to Siyeh bend. I guess that means you are free
to attempt going through the Big Drift.

We did meet someone along the way who was biking up to the Loop and then hiking up to Swiftcurrent
Lookout. It was obvious he had done this before -- well prepared with snowshoes and gear. Yesterday
up there would have spectacular views if it was above the clouds, though probably windy. I remain
in awe of people who do that.

I rode the pass on Saturday also. I started early. From triple arches, there was a lot of black ice, so I walked a lot, but it was worth it.
I walked almost to Hidden Lake Overlook. Next trip up I'm planning on strapping my touring skis on the bike. It's awesome up there.

Holy crap, why hasn't this occurred to me? So before the road is open you can still ride it? How about in the fall.

I'm am so up for a cold ride up the road someday. Want to ride it so bad but don't want to interfere with all the normal vehicle traffic.

Bring on the cold rides!

Image

Especially considering the 100+ degree temps I saw while out on a century ride yesterday. I'll take the cold anyday, LOL!
