Pics from my late May trip

Well, I've been back a week so I guess I should stop being lazy and post some pictures. :)

My Memorial Day bike ride to Logan Pass was interrupted by a bit of a blockage at triple arches.

A couple days later I spent the day at Bowman Lake. A pair of loons came right up to me after sunrise, which surprised me. I hiked a bit and stuck around for sunset. Smoke was starting to build in the area.

Smoke was really bad Thursday around Lake Mcdonald so I passed on another bike ride and just kicked back all day. I made my way to Many Glacier early on Friday and smoke was still pretty bad. Not much going on for sunrise due to clouds, fog and smoke. Made my way down to Redrock Lake and sat there for a few hours watching the moose family and various waterfowl interact.

Sadly I might have to pass on my annual September trip this year but I'm hoping I can still make it work. Otherwise I'll have to wait until next May to return.

That shot of the avalanche is really cool. Were you one of the people stranded for a night? These photos are great! thanks.

Really nice photos Jay. I especially love the shot of the moose family. Thanks for taking the time to post them.

The moose cow with her twins is just really a super "get" Jay. :D
So was the loon too. I've seen loons frequently at Bowman, but never anywhere close to shore.
Great stuff. I hope you're able to get back in September.

Thanks folks.

Nope, wasn't stranded by the avalanche. I got there a little after noon I think and there were plenty of people carrying their bikes across it. A park ranger showed up eventually but I headed back down shortly after.

The moose was one of those "there isn't another place on earth I'd rather be right now" instances. I probably should have taken more pictures but most of the time I was just sitting there watching with a big smile on my face. I'll get some more shots of them edited and add them to this thread when I get time.

Some wonderful photos posted by Pete recently have motivated me to go back through pictures from my visit.

More of the moose in Many Glacier:

More loons on Bowman Lake:

Bald eagle I was hoping would do some hunting, or at least turn at look at me. No luck there :(

Lake McDonald on a calm cloudless morning and then basically the same shot but with a lot of clouds and waves...not the ideal long exposure shot but I still enjoyed the sunrise.

Thank you Jay for the compliment. I hope you get back to GNP soon so we can see more from you!
I like how you're able to get such sharp images. How far were you from that eagle and the loon?
What camera and lens?
Thanks again

I was probably 400 feet from the eagle, I think I had to crop that photo a bit to get closer. The loons were within 100 feet at that point...they started halfway across the lake and I sat there for 15 minutes as they came directly toward me.

I mainly use a Nikon D810 for everything but do have an old D7200 that gets some use at times for wildlife. The lens was a Nikkor 200-500 f5.6...basically a "budget" super telephoto. I use the Nikkor 70-200 and Nikkor 24-70 for basically everything else.

One day I'll win the lottery and be able to afford a 600mm f4.

I'm still uncertain if I'll return this year. I'll be at Isle Royale NP at the time I'm usually in Glacier, mid-September. I'm hoping I can swing through for a week in early October but that'll be heavily dependent on the weather and my workload.
