Walk-in Status

Post by zozeppelin »

Similar to the 'trail status' initiative, I'm taking a stab at recreating the walk-in status.

In theory, the new rec.gov website would already have this covered, but I think there is a disconnect with actual status (winter, closed for bears, etc). There also is a limitation on how many walk-in sites are actually available (walk-in yes/no is the granularity), but there is no fix for that.

So here we go ... feedback always appreciated. This will go through a couple revisions to better emulate the original page (icons, colors) and sync with site status (which is currently down). I've also had a thought to create a 'best available' by area and # of days for the next 3 days.

This is nice. Do you know if the old walkin page is gone for good? It really is useful to see the status of all camps on one page.

Don't worry, it's 'automated', so most of the work is done. The thought is to use this as a proof of concept and then deploy on this website with automatic updates.

So is the link on the chat page going to be on demand? I mean we hit the link and it will pull the live data from rec.com?

That’s the idea (once a day refresh to start, presumably after 5 PM for an insight into the next day for people going early for permits) - but both Rec.gov and glacier trail status as there seems to be a disconnect between the two regarding winter status, closure, etc - presumably Rec.gov isn’t keeping up with current conditions. You can see that when comparing the two tables, ignoring the 2 day offset, the first table has only rec.gov and the second has also included nps status from the trails page.

That said, all depends on feedback / interest.

Thanks, there's definitely interest on my part. It's a pain to check walkin status using rec.gov as it is.

Fifty Mountain is open for the season. If you were wanting to pick it up in July, it’s wide open for now.
