Waterton to Swiftcurrent to Dragon's Tail - Sept '23

Post by FuzzySideDown »

Hey gang.... This took place last fall around Sept 1 through Sept 8. It starts off with LikeToHike and myself and we eventually met up with Teapot57 and XenaTheWarriorHiker at Granite Park Chalet. (Some of the pics were pilfered from the group due to their general awesomeness)

Sept 1. - The day before

Stocking up with the required amount of backpacking cheese.

Sept 2. - Morning of departure

The morning view from Many Glacier Hotel. I thought it was neat seeing the moon over the peak there in the morning. I'm going with that being good luck.

Here I was trying to figure out how best to pack Teapot's prize for the yearly Going To The Sun Road contest. There was indeed an actual prize last year! Tibber graciously donated hers to Teapot which was very nice of her! Though those were waiting in the trunk of the car at Swiftcurrent Lodge for the very end. I don't think I could have carried 8 all the way to Granite Park. And truth be told here.... Only 3 made it full to Granite Park... The Vienna Lager was gone before we left the parking lot at the border crossing.

Inside of the Many Glacier Lodge. If you've never had a chance to visit it, I really recommend it. It's a neat bit of history.

Chief Mountain in the background on our ride up to the border to the Belly River Trailhead with the help of Wyett from Backpackers Ferry. He's great at helping shuttle you around when there's not a shuttle around.

And now we're on the Canadian side having just walking through the border crossing into Canada awaiting to be picked up by Kelly with Tamarack Outdoors (who was also awesome!) to take us to Waterton so we could take the boat back into the US at Goat Haunt to actually get started on our hike.

Somewhere in here we passed someone who mentioned they saw a couple of grizzly bears near the trail, so we had our heads on a swivel around here... We ended up not seeing any until after we were at camp and all set up.

Spending the night at Fifty Mountain. It's a great spot. Quite a few people there that night, plus one guy without a permit. Not exactly sure where he setup camp. The whole camp spent a good portion of the early evening standing around just a little ways to the Granite Park side of camp watching this mamma griz with her 3 cubs. It was quite the site. They were in the distance quite a ways as it took a small set of binoculars to get a good look at them, but it kept everybody a little on edge going to sleep that night. What wind we did have was going straight towards the bears so they were definitely aware of our presence, but aside from the mom occasionally looking directly at our fairly large group, they all stayed where they were and we all stayed where we were. One of the most interesting things was the cubs unique color variations. One was quite dark almost like a black bear. One was what I'd think of as a traditionally brown colored grizzly, and one that was almost white. It was really quite unique. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics of any of them that night. It's was still pretty neat to see though....

Yep, the privy has no walls there, but you actually get pretty good privacy with it being surounded by trees, so it's really quite nice, asside from the lid being broken when we were there, but it works.

Sept 4th - Leaving Fifty Mountain

The deer were busy around camp in the morning. And they wandered through camp off and on over night as well. I tried to remind myself that as long as the deer were near at night, it probably meant the bear were not, so I chalked that up as a good thing. I still slept with the bear spray close that night.

It started raining pretty good after the Ahern Drift and we got soaked. Our upcoming night was to be at the Granite Park Campground, but we hightailed it to the chalet, on the off chance they had a cancellation. They did not, but it was still nice to sit around the wood stove for a bit. The crew there was very accommodating knowing that we did have 2 nights scheduled there after this night. After drying out a little bit, and getting a slight window in the rain, we took off down the hill to the actual campground where we'd spend the night.

Sept 5 - Leaving Granite Park Campground for Granite Park Chalet

Today we were going to meet up with Teapot and Xena. We thought we'd go for day hike up to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook and possibly run into them along the way. We got close to the junction for the overlook and noticed there was a grizzly over turning some stones up the hill not far from the trail up there. We waiting around there for a bit to see if it might leave the area, but it seemed to keep getting closer to the trail up above and there was a lot of people around. It started following a small group down the trail up there, so once they got a ways a way from the bear, we figured it was best for us to leave the area and headed back to the chalet.

This was a good picture of it from Teapot and Xena as they passed by it on their way in on the Highline to the Chalet.

Sept 6 - Back to Grinnell Glacier Overlook

Oooops.... I hit submit a smidge early there....

Still Sept 6th... and we're all heading back to Grinnell Glacier Overlook today... It was windy as all get out up there today! We didn't stay very long, but it's a great view up there for sure.

On the way back, we could see the chalet in the distance.

We got back and cooked up some soup and made ourselves a pretty awesome backpackers charcuterie board and split some of Teapot's beer prize and then proceeded to play a big game of UNO, and then a major game of Love Letter. Next time you see Teapot, be sure and ask her if she has a Guard?  That was a fun night! Followed by an amazing sunset!!

And then we proceeded to be serenaded off to sleep by some random folks singing down stairs while also perhaps not realizing how thin the walls actually are. It was pretty funny.

LikeToHike and I follow it up the next day with a hike up Dragon's Tail... More on that in the next post...

Sept 8th - Dragon's Tail

This is one of my favorite hikes. It's not too long of a hike yet loaded with great views.

We stopped up at the saddle and debated whether to go on or not with the way the clouds were but they opened up a little bit over the Dragons Tail peak itself so we did keep going.

We got to the top (false summit) but didn't stay too long on account of the chance for weather, though it never really turned into anything, but it sure looked like it could have, so down we went.

Nice Trip Report! Good idea not staying too long on Dragon's tail with the weather worsening. Was the picture of the chute the one going up Reynolds?

That was one of my favorite Glacier trips! We really had a fun time together and got along great as a group. Summer 2023 did not go as planned for me, so wrapping up the Glacier season with this trip was a high note.

I have slacked with writing a trip report for 2023, but I’ll try to get out a condensed version of my bummer of a summer. Long story short for now, I partially tore my Achilles on the Belly River trip in July, and this Granite trip was in September, exactly 8 weeks later, which was the earliest time I was advised to return to hiking.

Thanks for the report, Fuzzy!

PS- very appropriate photo for ending your report.
